Thorough estimates of ground shaking require an integrated
set of maps predicting parameters needed both for earthquake
resistant design and earthquake damage or loss estimates.
Earthquake Resistant Design Parameters needed are:
  • Peak Ground Acceleration
  • Response Spectral Acceleration at 0.3 sec
-- short-period ground motion, most significant for buildings near 3 stories
  • Response Spectral Acceleration at 1.0 sec
-- mid-period ground motion, most significant for buildings over 10 stories
  • Earthquake Intensity Parameters are needed in terms of:
  • Modified Mercalli, Rossi-Forel, or San Francisco scales
