Strong ground shaking is the fundamental cause
of most property and life loss during earthquakes.
  • Strong ground shaking may cause damage to man-made structures directly or it may cause damage indirectly due to shaking induced ground failure, fire, water inundation, or hazardous material release.
  • For a repeat of the Great 1906 earthquake about 90% of the losses are expected to result from direct shaking effects and about 9-10% from indirect effects (Bendimerad et al., 1995).
  • Maps of strong ground shaking are the basis for Earthquake Loss Estimation and Resulting Hazard Mitigation Efforts!
