Strong Ground Shaking depends on:
  • Source Attributes -       Type (Strike-Slip, Thrust, ...);       Size (Magnitude)
  • Distance from the rupture -
          Attenuation due to: geometrical spreading, intrinsic absorption, and crustal structure
  • Local Site Conditions -
          Shear velocity and distribution of rock and soil deposits.
  • Maps of Ground Shaking in an urbanized region must account for variations in each of these factors.
