Data Organization and Format

The November 03, 2002 22:12 UTC Mw 7.9 Denali Fault, Alaska Earthquake data recorded by the USGS National Strong-Motion Network (NSMN) and the University of Alaska Geophysical Institute Anchorage Region Strong-Motion Network (University of Alaska contact: Niren Biswas niren@giseis.alaska.edu) are available via the NSMP ftp server in the folder (directory) "20021103_2212" (https://ca.water.usgs.gov/nsmp/20021103_2212).    The time series provided are available in uncorrected acceleration, corrected acceleration, corrected velocity, corrected displacement, response spectra (relative displacement, relative velocity, pseudo-velocity, and absolute acceleration), and Fourier amplitude spectra of corrected acceleration.  All of the data are in SMC format.  

In a departure from previous file-naming conventions (where for a particular channel the different the time series data all had the same filename, and thus required separate directories for each data type), the file names for the data have the following form:

where 'RRRR' is the four-digit recorder serial number (including leading 0's) for the USGS data, 'c' is the channel number of the recorder ('a' corresponds to channel 1, 'b' to channel 2 , etc), the '_x' is used to identify the data type, and the suffix refers to the data format (rs2 and fs1 are valid SMC format types recognized by the BAP processing program.  Important note: 'RRRR' is the four-digit station code (k201 to k222) for the University of Alaska's Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS) data.

The data are stored in two directories: uncorrected (only uncorrected acceleration) and corrected (all of the corrected and processed data, including acceleration, velocity, displacement, response spectra and Fourier amplitude spectra. This convention for organizing the data was implemented to avoid confusion between the directory names (Vol1, Vol2, … Vol6) previously used for some earlier events and the standard conventions for Volume1, Volume2 and Volume 3 processing.

• Data for stations 8038 (Anchorage; New Fire Station #1, S/N 1737), 8036 (Anchorage; DOI Office of Aircraft Services, S/N 1731), 8037 (Anchorage; NOAA Weather Facility, S/N 1397), and 8039 (Anchorage; New Fire Station #7, S/N 1734) were posted on 11/07/2002.  
• Data for stations 2784 (Valdez City Hall, S/N 1728), 2723 (Valdez Dock Company, S/N 1727), and 8034 (Valdez Civic Center, S/N 1713) were added on 11/08/2002.
• Station 8036 (Anchorage; DOI Office of Aircraft Services, S/N 1731) data were revised on 11/08/2002.
• Data for stations R109 (temp, S/N 5596), Carlo (temp, S/N 5595), FA02 (Fairbanks; Ester Fire Station, S/N 5609), and 8017 (Anchorage; Aho Residence, S/N 1736) were posted on 11/13/2002.
• Data for station 8016 (Anchorage; BP Building, S/N 1356) were added to data set on 11/22/2002.  Only uncorrected data served out for channel 3 (trace c) due to noisy sensor.
• Data for station 2767 (Moose Creek Dam, S/N 4005) were posted on 12/02/2002.
• Data for station 2797 (Fairbanks; University of Alaska; Elvey Building, S/N 2178) were added to the data set on 12/05/2002.
• Data for stations ps07, ps08, ps09, ps10, ps11, and ps12 (Trans-Alaska Pipeline) were added to the data set on 12/31/2002, updated 05/02/2006.
