Data Organization and Format (PS09, PS10, and PS11):

The November 03, 2002 22:12 UTC Mw 7.9 Denali Fault, Alaska Earthquake data recorded by the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company (APSC) are provided on a cooperative basis by Alyeska to the USGS.

Time series for these three stations are available in two versions: “Volume 1” (minimally processed) and “Volume 2” (fully processed).  Minimally processed (V1) acceleration records have been corrected in accordance with the detailed post-calibration of sites PS09, PS10, and PS11, as described in USGS Open-file Report 2006-1028 (hereafter referred to as the "Report"). The same Report so describes creation of the fully processed (V2) records — by somewhat unusual methods. The report citation is:

Evans, J. R., E. G. Jensen, R. Sell, C. D. Stephens, D. J. Nyman, R. C. Hamilton, and W. C. Hager Calibration of PS09, PS10, and PS11 Trans-Alaska Pipeline System Strong-Motion Instruments, with Acceleration, Velocity, and Displacement Records of the Denali Fault Earthquake, 03 November 2002, U.S. Geol. Surv. Open File Rep., 2006–1028, 55 pp., 2006.

Excel tables, .tiff images of the figures, and processing diaries associated with this Report and the data processing can be accessed through these links.

The data for PS09, PS10, and PS11 are all in COSMOS v1.2 format (pdf file, 0.6 Mb) and in somewhat less complete form as MatLab “.mat” binary files. The COSMOS file names are in a format illustrated by these names:

20021103_221248_XX_PS10_Vo1_Ch1_A.cosm
20021103_221245_XX_PS09_Op1_Vo2_Ch1_D.cosm

where the first portion (e.g., “20021103_221245_”) is the date and time of the time-series’ first sample rounded to the nearest second (“YYYYMMDD_hhmmss_”).  The “XX_” is the Federation of Digital Broad-Band Seismograph Networks (FDSN) network name for “test volumes from temporary experiments”, but in this case merely stands for the APSC permanent network (for which there is no formal FDSN network name).  Next follows the station name (e.g., “PS10_”), then the processing option (only for Volume 2, processed files, e.g., “Op1”) — there is only one processing option for PS09 and PS11 (acausal) but there are two processing options for PS10 (causal and acausal).  Reasons for choosing Op1 or Op2 for PS10 for particular purposes are described in the Report — caveat emptor.  Next is the “Volume” number, “Vo1” for the minimally processed acceleration records or “Vo2” for the fully processed acceleration, velocity, and displacement records.  Next is the channel number (“Ch1_” = Vertical, “Ch2_” = Pipeline-parallel horizontal, “Ch3_” = Pipeline-normal horizontal, the latter nominally “North” and “East”).  We do not supply horizontal components rotated either to true cardinal (North and East) or to fault-parallel and fault-normal directions since these are easily derived from the original components.  Finally are “A.csm”, “V.csm”, or “D.csm” for an acceleration, velocity, or displacement trace in the COSMOS v1.2 format.  There is exactly one trace per file.

Data for other Alyeska sites (PS07, PS08, and PS12)

These three sites were not post-calibrated for the Report and are presented in SMC format for only “Volume 1” (minimally processed, using nominal values of calibration constants) records. These “raw” acceleration filenames are:

   RRRRc.smc

where “RRRR” is the four-character Alyeska station code (e.g., “PS12”) and 'c' is the channel identifier (“a”, “b”, or “c” for pipeline-parallel horizontal, vertical, and pipeline-normal horizontal — note the difference in channel order from the three post-calibrated sites).

Additional Notes: (posted 04/28/2006):

The information in the headers of these files has been revised from that the first versions of the data as served by the USGS. Changes for PS09, PS10, and PS11 are described in the Report and in extensive header comments; they are unchanged from the second USGS posting (05/22/2003) for PS07, PS08, and PS12. Header changes include:

1)  Revised information about the measured (PS09, PS10, PS11) and nominal (PS07, PS08, PS12) filter characteristics.

2)  The make and model of the digitizer and the serial numbers (for PS09, PS10, PS11) and models of the Honeywell Sundstrand accelerometers, along with measured (PS09, PS10, PS11) and nominal (PS07, PS08, PS12) values of instrument sensitivity and resolution.

3)  For PS09, PS10, and PS11 additional information about the baseline correction applied to the data, however, see the Report for the most detailed information on instrument post-calibration and processing methods and steps.

Downloads

Both minimally processed and fully processed data are available for PS09, PS10, and PS11 — as .zip files. Only minimally processed (“raw”) acceleration data are available for PS07, PS08, and PS12, and only as one .zip file containing all records.
