LECTURESHIPS AND OTHER ACADEMIC SERVICE :
(List seminars presented, courses taught, graduate students advised with thesis titles, committee participation, etc.,
and give schools, dates, as appropriate.)
- 1983- Present: Consulting Professor of Geophysics, Stanford University
As consulting professor in the Department of Geophysics I perform a variety of functions.
The most basic is to supervise graduate students who are preparing MS and PhD thesis.
I participate in seminar courses on seismic studies of the continental lithosphere, regional geophysics and tectonics.
Assist in preparation of written qualifying exams, and sit as one of three advisors for PhD oral exams.
Contact is most extensive with Professors S. Klemperer, G. Thompson, M. D. Zoback, and N. Sleep.
- Assisted in supervising (to various degrees) these PhD theses:
Rufus D. Catchings, Crustal Structure of the Western U.S., 1987
W. Steve Holbrook, Crustal Structure: NV., California, and West Germany, 1988
Eric Goodwin, Seismological Studies of Crustal Structure and Composition: Basin and Range, and Alaska, 1989
Kate Miller, Structure and Tectonics of Central California from Seismic Reflection Data, 1991
Craig Jarchow, Investigations of Magmatic Underplating beneath the NW Basin and Range Province, Nevada,
Seismic Data Acquisition and Tectonic Problems of the Columbia Plateau, Washington,
and the Mohorovicic Discontinuity Worldwide, 1991
Bruce Beaudoin, Crustal Structure and Evolution of Central Alaska and West Antarctica, 1992
Stanley Ruppert, Shear wave structure and mantle tomography of the Colorado Plateau-Basin and Range Transition Zone, 1995
Moritz Fliedner, Crustal Structure of the Sierra Nevada, 1996
Yitzak Makovsky, Wide-angle Seismic Reflection Measurements on the Tibetan Plateau, 1997
Nicola Godfrey, Structure and Evolution of Northern California from Seismic Refraction Measurements, 1997
