U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY DIGITAL DATA SERIES DDS-7 DIGITIZED STRONG-MOTION ACCELEROGRAMS OF NORTH AMERICAN EARTHQUAKES THROUGH 1986 GETTING STARTED -- A BRIEF TUTORIAL If you have not already done so, run the installation procedure by making the CD-ROM drive the active drive and typing INSTALL followed by pressing the key. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. This document involves a search and file name retrieval exercise using the DSMA data. Before doing the exercise, you should print a hard copy of the Overview and Getting Started options on the MAIN MENU. Do this by highlighting Overview on the MAIN MENU, pressing the key, and then pressing key. Do the same for the Getting Started option. Save the hard copies for future reference. The purpose of this example is to find the records of Earthquakes approx. occurring in the continental United States between 1970 and 1986 with depths between 1 and 10 km, and epicentral distances between 1 to 10 km and having any magnitude between 5.0 and 9.0. GENERAL INFORMATION Step 1. All data on CD-ROM DDS-7, are written in ASCII format and each record is terminated by a standard carriage return/line feed. Therefore, all data should be directly readable on all computer systems. The data are organized by year. A subdirectory appears for each year beginning in 1933 through 1986. NOTE: SOME EARLY YEARS HAVE NO DATA FILES. All files are labeled in the following manner: Example: 003a17pa.pna (1986 subdirectory) 003=Julian Day within the year subdirectory a =hour (0=a,23=x) 17 =minute(0-59) pa.pn=recording observatory papn a = component ENTER SEARCH SYSTEM Step 2. Type DSMA or type Seismic and select option 1 (Execute File Selection Software). The first screen of the search software is an acknowledgment screen identifying the authors. Press to advance to the selection screen. Press the up and down arrow keys to move the highlighted cursor over any item to be selected. Press the key to select an item. When an item has been selected, a + symbol appears directly to the left of the selected item. If you select an option by mistake or change your mind, simply place the highlighted cursor over the item to un-select, and press the key. The + symbol will disappear. If you wish to exit from the search system, move highlighted cursor over EXIT SYSTEM, and press the key. 1 SELECT SEARCH CRITERIA Step 3. To start the example, move the highlighted cursor over Earthquake Lat/Long and press key. You have now selected Lat/Long as a search parameter. Next move the highlighted cursor over the Earthquake Date, and press the key. Move cursor over the Epicentral Distance and press the key. Move cursor over the Earthquake Depth and press the key. Move cursor over Any Magnitude and press the key. You have now selected all of the necessary search parameters. Step 4. END SEARCH CRITERIA Next, you must indicate that you are finished selecting search parameters. To do this, move the highlighted cursor over the END SELECTION option and press the key. SELECT LAT/LONG RECTANGLE Step 5. The next screen will show a box identifying the latitude and longitude extents of the data base. To select data approx. within the continental United States, enter 49.0 North Latitude , -125.0 Latitude . This lat/long defines the Top/Left corner to be included in the search criteria. Next enter 26.0 North and -67.0. These two values indicate the lower right corner of the U.S. A message will ask if the entered values are correct. You may answer Y(Yes) and continue or answer N(No) and repeat this step. SELECT BEGINNING YEAR/MONTH/DAY/HOUR/MINUTE Step 6. The next screen will ask for the beginning year. Enter 1970. A screen listing of days for approx. three months will appear. Use the UP,Down,Left, and Right arrows to move the cursor, and use PgUp and PgDn to select the screen with the desired days. All days are given as Month/Day and Julian Day (1-366). For this lesson, move highlighted cursor over Jan 1 (001) and press . A new screen will prompt you for the beginning hour (0-23), enter 0. Next you are prompted for the beginning minute (0-59), enter 0. Next a message will ask if the entered values are correct. You may answer Y(Yes) and continue or answer N(No) and repeat this step. SELECT ENDING YEAR/MONTH/DAY/HOUR/MINUTE Step 7. The select ending year/month/day/hour repeat steps as given in Step 6. Note that unknown days are identified as day 768, unknown hours are given as 24 and unknown minutes are identified as 68. SELECT EPICENTRAL DISTANCE Step 8. Next you are promoted to enter the lower (smaller) epicentral distance in kilometers. Enter 1. You are promoted to enter the higher (larger) epicentral distance in kilometers. Enter 10. Next a message will ask if the entered values are correct. You may answer Y(Yes) and continue or answer N(No) and repeat this step. 2 SELECT EPICENTRAL DEPTH Step 9. Next you are prompted to enter the shallow (lower) Epicentral Depth. Enter 1. You are now promoted to to enter the deep (larger) Epicentral Depth, enter 10. Next a message will ask if the entered values are correct. You may answer Y(Yes) and continue or answer N(No) and repeat this step. SELECT ANY MAGNITUDE Step 10. Next you are prompted to enter the lower magnitude. Enter 5.0. Now you are prompted to enter the higher magnitude. Enter 9.0. This option will select any record having a magnitude between 5.0 and 9.0 independent of the type of magnitude. In other words, if any one magnitude (Moment, MS, ML or Other) is between the low and high entered values, the record is selected. Next a message will ask if the entered values are correct. You may answer Y(Yes) and continue or answer N(No) and repeat this step. SEARCH Step 11. The system will begin searching file acindex.eq. This file contains a summary of all 4530 data files. Although not searched, an additional summary file (acatalog.eq) is also included. In this lesson, 104 summary records will be recovered and stored in a file named temp located in directory seismic on disc drive as defined during the INSTALL. DISPLAY SELECTED RECORDS Step 12. By moving highlighted cursor, you may select to (1) exit the system, (2) Display the ID summary of the selected records, (3) Display the File Summary of the selected records, (4) Write the File names of the selected records, or (5) choose a new set of search parameters. In this exercise, choose option 2. The next screen will summarize all selected records. Use Up,Down arrows and PgUp, PgDn to view displayed all records. Enter Esc to escape the display. Next, choose option 3. This display also summarizes selected records, however, it also includes the data file name. WRITE ALL SELECTED FILE NAMES Step 13. Next, choose option 3. The system will prompt you to enter a file file name (you must include a complete path like: c:\myfile). This option will also display all file names which are being written. You have now completed a tutorial running ACATALOG using DSMA data for North and Central American between 1933 and 1986. 3
